A visit to the Parque das Aves at Iguassu Falls is a must if you are on holiday in the area. Translated at the park of birds it is located just by the visitors centre at the entrance to the Brazilian national park and houses a wide variety of tropical and exotic birds from Brazil and elsewhere in South America.
It is easy to visit the Parque das Aves independently whilst at Iguassu Falls or if you are with a guide they will be able to provide a more informative visit.
A pathway takes you on a natural route through the park passing numerous enclosures where rare species are being looked after or bred due to difficulties in the wild. Many of these are in large fenced off areas however as you progress through the Parque das Aves you will walk through a number of open enclosures where the bird fly freely amongst the visitors.
The first of these which you encounter is the toucan enclosure where Toco Toucans and other varieties can be found. Many of them can be seen up close, perching on the handrails of the walkways and make for a colourful photograph as do the stunning bright red Guapis which are generally found in northern Brazil, particularly the Parnaiba Delta.
The beauty of the Parque das Aves is that it allows you to view a huge and varied range of birds which is perfect for those visitors without enough time to head to the Pantanal or other prime bird-watching spots in Brazil.
One of the final enclosures you reach is the macaws which if you have any fear of birds you may wish to approach with caution. Inside this vast enclosure is a stunning array of colourful macaws, hyacinth macaws and other parrots which swoop from one end of the enclosure to the other narrowly missing the heads of visitors and exposing their incredible plumage as they spread their wings. The noise is quite deafening as the squawking increases!
The final stage of the visit to the Parque das Aves allows you to hold a parrot which children will adore, in fact for families visiting Brazil it makes for a wonderful part of a holiday and a great degree of interactivity.
The Parque das Aves also has significant breeding programmes which are not available for the public to visit but form an important role in the day to day life at the park.
The gift shop as you exit the park has some of the cheapest gifts at the falls and a great place to pick up a cuddly toucan toy or the essential hyacinth macaw fridge magnet!
All in all the Parque das Aves is a wonderful inclusion on a holiday to Brazil and an essential visit while at Iguassu Falls.
